The 2013 Understanding Korea Essay Contest
The Center for International Affair at AKS is the home of the Understanding Korea
Project, which seeks to correct inaccurate information on and improve contents about
Korea in foreign textbooks. We are pleased to announce the 2013 Understanding
Korea Essay competition, aimed at promoting interest in Korea-related contents in
foreign textbooks and Understanding Korea materials. Please note the following
guidelines.

1. Themes
Theme 1: The image of Korea in foreign countries
Subthemes
i. Thoughts on images of Korea presented in foreign textbooks
- Reflections on the Korea-related contents you read in textbooks, creative ways
to improve and increase that contents
ii. Ways to improve the images of Korea abroad
- Creative ways to improve the image of Korea in your country
* Please choose one topic from the two subthemes and write an essay. The essay
must be written in the application form.
Theme 2: Understanding Korea Materials
Subthemes
i. Review of the use of Understanding Korea materials
- How the materials were used, ideas to improve usage
ii. Ideas for developing Understanding Korea materials
- Strong and weak points of the materials, additions, and revisions
- Ideas and topics for Understanding Korea materials, a detailed plan or proposal
to develop material
* Please choose one topic from the two subthemes and write an essay. The essay
must be written in the application form.
※ The Understanding Korea materials are those distributed by the Center for
International Affairs at AKS. Full details for the materials can be found on the
homepage of the Center: (http://www.ikorea.ac.kr/)

2. Eligibility
Everyone interested in the Understanding Korea Project

3. Submission
- All essays must be written in the essay contest application (downloaded from
the Center's homepage) and submitted via email to highspirit@aks.ac.kr
- All other submissions will be disqualified.
- Submitted essays will not be returned and the Center for International Affairs
will obtain copyright.
- Applicants can apply to both themes and different subthemes separately. In
other words, if they wish to do so, applicants can submit four essays for all
four subthemes.

4. Language of Essay: Korean or English

5. Deadline: September 1 (Sun) -- September 30 (Mon), 2013, 6:00 pm (Korean time)
Submissions after the deadline will not be accepted.

6. Prizes
※ Taxes related to the acceptance of and use of the prize are the winners’
responsibility.
※ All applicants will received a souvenir (First 400 applicants only)

7. Announcement: Friday, November 8, 2013
The result of the contest will be posted on the Center's homepage
(http://intl.ikorea.ac.kr/korean)and all winners will be notified individually.
